WORLD OF START-UPS - AGARWALS AS ROLE MODELS
Agarwal is an Indian community, originally
found throughout North India but now spread across many Indian states and other
countries as well. The Agarwals are the descendant of Shri Agrasenji maharajah of
the Solar Dynasty. Members of the Agarwal community are known for their
business and for many years now have been influential and prosperous in
India.
According to the census board there are
3000 census records for the last name Agarwal.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
Agarwals were famous for their business
even during the Mughal Era -
One such personality was 'Todar Mal'.
Todar Mal was one of the Navratans of
Mughal Emperor Akbar's Darbar. He was believed to be an Agarwal as he became
the finance minister of the Mughal Empire.
TO THE PRESENT
Agarwals are still carrying out the legacy of
being a business man/ business women foreword. Top notch companies like Flipkart, Myntra,
Snapdeal, OYO Rooms, Ola Cabs and many more are owned by the Agarwals. Few
other companies that has joined the list are - Urban Ladder (a furniture
portal), Zomato (restaurant search site), No Broker(an online real estate
startup) and droom ( a portal for used cars).
- FLIPKART – Founded by Sachin Bansal & Binny Bansal, Bangalore based Flipkart is valued at $15 billion is India’s largest online retail e-commerce site. It was founded in the year 2007. Both Sachin and Binny Bansal were employees at Amazon, an international e-commerce site but quit the the job as they decided to launch an e-commerce site of their own. Now Flipkart ranks among the top 10 e-commerce sites. Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal have also acquired Myntra ( another e-commerce site) owned by Mukesh Bansal.
The 3 Bansals are not related and have only one thing in common
apart from their surnames and that is all the 3 are alumni of the prestigious
Indian Institute of Technology.
Both the e-commerce sites have done and are doing very well India
and the Agarwal Community is proud of them.
- SNAPDEAL – Co-founded by Rohit Bansal, this online retail sector is valued at $6.5 Billion. It was founded in the year 2010.
- OLA CABS - Founded by Bhavish Aggarwal in the year 2010. This company was found in Mumbai but now is headquartered in Bangalore. The company claims to control over 80% of the online taxi market in India. Bhavish Aggarwal like all other famous agarwals is also an alumni of Indian Institute of Technology.
- OYO ROOMS – A Forbes’ annual list of high achievers Ritesh Agarwal is the founder and CEO of OYO Rooms. He is one great example who made it to the top without the IIT mark. He is India’s first recipient of the Theil fellowship, a program started by the PayPal founder for college dropouts. OYO Rooms short for ‘ on your own’ is a guru gram based and is now present in 160 cities and has about 4,500 partner hotels.
- IIT or no IIT, Agarwals have been and still are making a name for themselves. Some of them are Lakshmi Mittal of Arcelor Mittal, Subhash Chandra Goel of Zee Entertainment Enterprise, Naresh Goel of Jet Airways, Varun Agarwal of Alma-Mater, Anil Agarwal of Vendata and Sunil Mittal of Bharti Airtel.
Agarwal women are also not far. They are competing with the men shoulder to shoulder and neck to neck and time & again they have also made us proud. Some role models are-
- MALINI AGARWAL - Malini is the face behind MissMalini publishing, the popular Indian Digital Entertainment Platform. Which includes its flagship properties missmalini.com, popular you tube channel missmalini videos and a social network of 2 million followers.
- RADHIKA AGGARWAL - She is one of the most successful women entrepreneurs in India. Radhilka is the co-founder and chief - business officer at shopclues. One of the three e-commerce market places in India.
All these people are a role model to only the younger Agarwal clan but also to the youth of the whole country. The younger generation now looks up to these people and admire them for their sheer hard work and patience and i am proud to be a part of such community.
